TRIO Programs - Support Services
Site Supervisor: Tiandra C. Jones
The missions of the TRIO Programs are to prepare low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented minority students for success in college and graduate school. More specifically, Upward Bound works with high-school students to prepare them for college admission, Student Support Services (SSS) works with undergraduates to help retain/graduate them and prepare them for the workforce. The RU 1st Paul Robeson Leadership Institute will provide students with direct academic support to become future leaders in the spirit of Rutgers' most notable graduate, Paul Robeson and includes a three-week, residential summer bridge experience for incoming Freshman. To achieve this mission, we provide a wide variety of academic and career support services, including but not limited to, academic coursework and tutoring; academic, career, and personal counseling; peer mentoring; and educational workshops.
We envision the role of a CSA fieldwork student to serve as an Assistant Program Coordinator, helping to develop, coordinate, and facilitate programs for SSS and the Paul Robeson Leadership Institute. Examples of such programs include: SSS weekly educational programs on academic and career-related topics, such as Job/Internship Search, Interview Skills, Study Skills, and Time Management; coordination of semester events such as exam preparation tutoring day, Access Week (focuses on providing opportunities to connect students with activities and events that promote the SAEE values of Access, Partnership, Inclusivity and Progressive Thinking) and National TRIO Day (celebrated annually on the last Saturday in February), orientations, etc.; special projects for special populations within the SSS program; and assistance with administrative tasks related to data gathering, report writing and interpretation.
